Of particular interest are letters written by Willoughby Hill Mangham while serving with Company I of the 11th Georgia Infantry Regiment to his father, John Grier Mangham. Written from Virginia, Mangham discusses the Battle of 1st Bull Run, fighting at Yorktown, troop movements, and the Emancipation Proclamation. Other correspondents include Solomon R. The collection consists of correspondence (and transcripts) from John G. La Roque, of the 4th Georgia Infantry Regiment, mainly to his wife, Nannie M. La Roque, from 1862-1864. La Roque's letters discuss the death of his son, his health and that of his wife, the morale and health of the men in Company E, troop movements in Virginia, casualties and deaths, news of friends and family, the problems of obtaining clothing for soldiers, the battle of Spotsylvania, Virginia, and his capture and imprisonment at Ft. Delaware, Delaware. The collection also contains one letter from La Roque to F.A. Billingslea, dated April 27, 1863, asking Billingslea to collect money owed La Roque and describing the readiness and troop strengths under General Jackson.

This collection consists of correspondence, the majority of which were written by John A. Savage, Jr. to his wife, Louise-- both from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Beginning with their courtship in 1857, the letters document their relationship. There is a chronological gap in the letters from 1859 until 1862 in which time John and Louise were married and started a family. In 1862 John entered the Civil War, and the correspondence reflects the physical and mental strains the war put on its participants. The letters from 1862-1865 were written while Savage served in the 28th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, where his regiment was involved in the battle of Helena (Ark.) and the siege of Vicksburg (Miss.). His later letters describe in detail the battle of Cold Harbor (Va.) while he was in the 36th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment.

The bulk of the collection (1861-1864) contains correspondence from Lee regarding military activities of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The letters discuss troop movements; supplies for troops; battle strategies for Elk Mountain, the Huntersville campaign, Cheat Mountain (W. Va.), and Dalton (Ga.); an exchange of prisoners (1862); casualty estimates at the battle of Fredericksburg; and reinforcement needs. Correspondees include Joseph E. Brown, Howell Cobb, and Henry Rootes Jackson. The collection also includes handwritten copies of 18th century land grants and indentures of John Parke Custis and a letter of Mary Custis Lee dated January 1872, Arlington (Va.) pertaining to proof of purchase of Arlington and the validity of her title to the property.

The collection consists of papers of the Thomas Jones family of Thomas County, Georgia from 1819-1889. Thomas Jones' papers include lists of taxable property (slaves, land, livestock, and equipment); indentures; and receipts for the purchase of slaves (names of enslaved people include Adam, a carpenter, Charles, Randal, John, Betsy, Nancy, Abram, Ann, Eliza, Sam, Ned, Bob, Lucy, Cherry, Nelson, Charlott, Robert, Lindy, and Mary). Letters are from Henry Francis Jones to his sister, and between Edwin T. Davis and Mattie Davis; and regard battles, military strategy, and military life. Papers of E.T. Davis concern Davis's military services, and include diary entries with regard to his service with the Dixie Boys of Company A, 57th Georgia Infantry Regiment. The collection also includes plats, indentures, and writs regarding land in Georgia, mainly Irwin and Thomas counties, and a portrait of Thomas Jones.

Sheats of Watkinsville (Ga.) and his brother John D. Thurmond of Coweta County (Ga.), both which discuss family news. Of particular interest are letters from his ward, John R. North, who served in the 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment in Virginia, which discuss the battles of Fair Oaks and Malvern Hill. The collection consists of papers of Edgeworth Bird and the Bird family from 1806, 1835-1949. The papers include correspondence, clippings, photographs (ca. 1848-1900) of the Bird family, a commonplace book (1843-1848) of Sallie C. Baxter containing extracts from her readings, an autograph book, an 1806 diary (author unknown) describing activities in Hancock and surrounding counties in Georgia, and genealogies of the Baxter, Bird, and allied families. Early correspondence (1839-1851) is between members of the Baxter family including letters between Thomas W. and Mary Baxter discussing his health, taxes, and land values; and letters from Leroy M. Wiley to Thomas detailing Wiley's trip to England in 1839. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence between Bird and Smith family members including Edgeworth Bird, Sallie Bird, Saida Bird (Smith), Wilson Edgeworth Bird, and Victor Edgeworth Smith. Of particular interest are letters (1856) from Edgeworth to Sallie describing his visit to New York City, Fire Island (N.Y.), and U.S. politics and letters written between family members during the Civil War. The Civil War letters from Edgeworth discuss the battles of Gettysburg (Pa.), Richmond (Va.), 2nd Bull Run (Va.), Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, and Sherman's March through Georgia. The letters also detail the management of Granite Farm (Hancock County, Ga.), slavery, and Saida's studies.

The collection consists of the papers of the Branch family of Savannah, Georgia from 1830-1961. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence between Charlotte Sawyer Branch and her sons John L., Sanford W., and Hamilton McDevil Branch, who served mainly in the 8th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters describe the 1st Battle of Bull Run, the death of John, the subsequent capture of Sanford (who had stayed with his dying brother), the Seven Days Battle, the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, and the Battle of Gettysburg, where Sanford was wounded and captured again. Hamilton transferred to the 54th Georgia Infantry Regiment and writes about the regiment's involvement in the Atlanta Campaign, particularly the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. He also writes from Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee while serving with Nathan Bedford Forrest.
